Bolton Water Works
Bespoke Suspended Access Solutions for Sedimentation Tank Refurbishment
Client: Mott MacDonald Bentley
Location: Bolton, England
Project Date: 2025
Delivery Partner: Apollo Cradles
Project Overview
Apollo was commissioned to design a bespoke suspended access system to facilitate safe operative access into a sedimentation tank undergoing refurbishment. The worksite presented significant logistical constraints—space was limited and heavily congested, leaving no room for standard suspended access equipment.
Leveraging our extensive experience and the unique capabilities of our sister company, Apollo Scaffold Services, we developed a custom X-beam frame to span the entire tank. The support rig was designed with pinpoint precision, anchoring perfectly into the walkways at either end. This strategic solution ensured that the access system was completely isolated from other ongoing works and plant operations, preventing any disruption.
Due to the restricted working area onsite and the potential impact on surrounding trades, it was not feasible to build the equipment on location. Fortunately, Apollo’s spacious depots and diverse fleet allowed us to preassemble the entire system offsite and deliver it fully built—streamlining both logistics and project execution.
The offsite build also provided an invaluable opportunity for the client to inspect the system prior to installation. This early review enabled Apollo to make minor adjustments, ensuring the system met every operational and safety requirement ahead of deployment.
Thanks to meticulous planning and efficient execution, the full installation was completed in under four hours—demonstrating Apollo’s commitment to speed, safety, and smart engineering.
Once the client had completed there works the equipment was loaded as a complete unit and dismantled back out our depot.
