Circular Platforms
Circular Platforms That Redefine Shaft Access
For over a decade, Apollo Cradles has been at the forefront of circular platform installations, supporting critical maintenance and inspection works across some of the UK’s most challenging vertical shafts. These platforms aren’t just equipment—they’re engineered solutions to access problems that most companies shy away from.
Our circular platforms are designed to operate in shafts ranging from 20 metres to over 200 metres in depth, many of which are legacy structures dating back more than 70 years. Installed from the top of the shaft, they safely lower operatives into position, enabling strategic works in confined, high-risk environments. Whether it’s structural surveys, mechanical upgrades, or emergency repairs, Apollo’s platforms provide a stable, secure base for precision tasks.
Remote Access, No Problem
Many of these shafts are located in remote or logistically complex areas, where traditional access routes are simply not viable. Apollo has worked closely with clients to overcome these barriers—coordinating helicopter lifts, controlled craning operations, and bespoke transport solutions to get our platforms exactly where they’re needed. Our adaptability and hands-on approach mean we can mobilize in environments where others can’t even begin.
Built to Fit, Engineered to Last
Thanks to our partnership with Apollo Scaffold Services, we offer fully bespoke fabrication to suit virtually any shaft geometry. Whether the entrance is at the top of a bridge tower or the bottom of a 1,400-metre-deep mine, we design and deliver platforms that meet the exact specifications of the site. This modular flexibility ensures safety, compliance, and operational efficiency—no matter the challenge.
Trusted Across the UK and Beyond
Apollo’s circular platforms are used by leading access companies across the UK and have been supplied for shaft servicing projects overseas. From heritage infrastructure to industrial sites and deep mining operations, our platforms are trusted for their reliability, safety, and ease of deployment.
Platform Construction
These lightweight access platform was constructed using:
Platform Construction & Features
- Saluminium X-Beam platforms, each 18m long and 1.3m wide
- Supported by bespoke GKN & Apollo’s X-Beam rigs
- Integrated access and egress gates for safe movement between platforms
- Platforms partially pre-assembled offsite due to restricted site access
Structural Verification & Load Analysis
To ensure absolute structural integrity and operational safety, Apollo engage with our trusted engineering partners, AWD, to carry out comprehensive design check calculations on all structural elements of the circular platforms. Their analysis will confirm a safe working load, accommodating the combined weight of personnel, tools, and equipment required for shaft maintenance operations.
Given the extended duration these platforms remain in position—often in exposed and unpredictable environments—AWD also conducted a detailed assessment of wind pressure put on the platfoms from trains and other transportation items. This allowed for the implementation of tailored restraint systems, ensuring platform stability throughout the project lifecycle. These measures are especially critical in remote or elevated locations, where wind loading and environmental stressors can pose significant risks.
Apollo’s proactive approach to engineering validation and environmental planning reflects our unwavering commitment to safety, compliance, and client confidence. Every platform we deploy is backed by rigorous analysis, collaborative design, and site-specific adaptation.
