Hammersmith Bridge

Project

Apollo Cradles has proudly supported maintenance and refurbishment works on the iconic Hammersmith Bridge for over 15 years. As a Grade II listed structure, the bridge holds significant historical and engineering value, yet it has long suffered from structural challenges due to increased traffic loads far beyond its original Victorian design parameters.

Throughout its operational history, the bridge has faced multiple closures, driven by safety concerns and the need for extensive structural assessments. Apollo has played a key role in enabling safe access for engineers and contractors, supplying bespoke suspended cradle systems tailored to the bridge’s unique geometry and over-water working conditions.

Most recently, the bridge has undergone major refurbishment works aimed at prolonging its lifespan and preserving its architectural heritage. These efforts have included strengthening critical components such as the suspension chains, pedestals, and deck systems—many of which required precision access solutions that Apollo was uniquely positioned to deliver.

Apollo’s continued involvement reflects our commitment to engineering excellence, heritage preservation, and safe working practices in complex environments.

Client Scope Of Works

Undertake structural repair works to address accident-related damage along with genral inspection works on Hammersmith Bridge , West London. As a Grade II listed structure spanning the River Thames, the project required sensitive handling and precision access to affected areas beneath the bridge deck.

Apollo’s Scope Of Works

  • Supply, delivery, and installation of various size suspended accesss cradles.
  • Cradle mounted on man-riding push trolleys to allow lateral mobility and full coverage beneath the bridge span.
  • Designed for safe and efficient access to damaged structural elements during repair operations.

Key Operational Considerations

  • All works conducted over water, requiring enhanced safety protocols and environmental awareness.
  • Cradle repositioning essential to accommodate phased repair zones and ensure uninterrupted workflow.
  • Coordination with marine traffic and local authorities to maintain compliance and minimise disruption.

Apollo’s cradle solution enabled safe, flexible, and efficient access for contractors working in a highly constrained and sensitive environment—reinforcing our reputation for engineering excellence in heritage infrastructure projects.
