Northern Spire Bridge – Sunderland

Project Overview

Apollo was awarded the access package to facilitate our client’s painting works on the underside of the bridge. Engaging with the client early in the process, we carefully identified their requirements for access and painting locations, ensuring a tailored solution.

The platform, measuring 27m x 12m, was designed to be suspended from the existing bridge beams. Due to the size and configuration of these beams, Apollo collaborated with AWD to manufacture a bespoke beam clamp fitting—complete with a protection plate to safeguard the painted surface.

Platform Construction

The lightweight access platform was constructed using:

  • Six aluminium X-beam boxes (0.75m diameter), evenly distributed along the 12m width and spanning 27m between the bridge supports.
  • An additional X-beam extension around the perimeter to support the handrailing.
  • Scaffold components, connecting the X-beam boxes for structural integrity.
  • 18mm thick buffalo boards, placed over the platform to provide a secure, lightweight working surface.

Structural Verification & Load Analysis

Apollo engaged AWD to perform design check calculations on all structural elements using STRAP Analysis Software. These checks assessed member capacities under various loading conditions, including local wind forces affecting the external structure.

The analysis determined a safe working load of 0.75T, accounting for personnel, tools, and equipment required for the painting operation.
