Queens Park Bridge, Heywood
Client: BDB Special Projects
Project Start: January 2024 – Febuary 2025
Project Overview
Apollo Cradles were approached to support the refurbishment of the handrail and edge protection system at Queens Park Bridge in Heywood, a project requiring precise access solutions to a challenging external elevation. Working in close collaboration with BDB, we developed a bespoke suspended platform system that eliminated the need for traditional full-height scaffolding from ground level to the bridge’s outer handrail. This innovative approach significantly reduced on-site resource demands, minimised disruption to the surrounding environment, and accelerated project timelines—delivering both safety and efficiency without compromise
The access platforms supplied by Apollo measured 18 metres in length and 1.3 metres in width, suspended securely at two points using our proprietary X-Beam suspension rigs. Due to restricted site access and constraints around Queens Park Bridge, the platforms were partially pre-assembled offsite. This strategic approach enabled efficient night-time delivery under controlled local road closures, minimising disruption to the public and streamlining installation. The result was a safe, stable working platform that met all operational requirements without the need for full ground-up scaffolding—saving both time and resources while maintaining uncompromised safety standards.
In total, six suspended platforms were installed along the west elevation of Queens Park Bridge, providing safe and efficient access for the refurbishment works. Once operations on the west side were completed, the platforms were systematically relocated to the east elevation to complete the remaining scope. This phased approach maximised equipment utilisation and minimised downtime, allowing the project to progress smoothly while maintaining strict safety and logistical controls throughout.
Platform Construction
The lightweight access platform was constructed using:
Platform Construction & Features
- Six aluminium X-Beam platforms, each 18m long and 1.3m wide
- Supported by bespoke GKN stirrups and suspended via Apollo’s X-Beam rigs
- Integrated access and egress gates for safe movement between platforms
- Manual vertical adjustment range of 500–1000mm without electrical winches
- Platforms partially pre-assembled offsite due to restricted site access
- Delivered during night shifts under controlled local road closures
Structural Verification & Load Analysis
Apollo engaged our trusted engierneg partems AWD to perform design check calculations on all structural elements The analysis determined a safe working load of 0.5T, accounting for personnel, tools, and equipment required for the repair operation. They also anylised local wind patterns to allow suitbal restrints to be put in place due to the lengh of time the platfroms would be in postion.
